Common Mistakes

5 container gardening mistakes I made so you don't have to

Successful container garden harvest with cantaloupe, garlic, beans, and peppers

Here are the biggest container gardening mistakes I see (and made myself): 1) Pots that are too small - undersized containers stress plants and dry out too fast. Go bigger than you think you need. 2) No drainage holes - roots sitting in water is a death sentence. Every pot needs drainage. 3) Using garden soil instead of potting mix - garden soil compacts in containers and won't drain properly. 4) Underwatering in summer - containers need water much more often than in-ground beds, especially in heat. 5) Skipping fertilizer - potting mix runs out of nutrients fast. Feed your containers every couple of weeks with a liquid fertilizer during the growing season.
